The island of Rhodes

"Indeed, the city of Helios is worthy of the god in beauty", Lucian

Rhodes is famous as the "Island of the Sun". When the Gods divided the world between themselves, so an ancient legend goes, "Helios" the sun of God noticed an island emerging from the sea. He was so fascinated by its beauty that he immediately asked Zeus whether he might have this island as his share. Rhodes was that island- a place favoured by nature.

An island that glided, and still glides, like a dolphin, over the waves in the transparent seas of the Aegean where West meets East. It is an island of culture, and its strategic location, as the crossroad of three continents, has endowed it with the traditions and heritage of many diverse civilizations.

"Rhodes, daughter of Aphrodite of the oceans, wife of Helios" (Pindar, Olympic Ode), has been a Greek island throughout its lengthy history, and the periods of prosperity, the culture and the vigour of its people has made its name known throughout the world.

The island was concurred by the Phoenicians, the Minoan Cretans, the Dorians, the Romans, and the Turks who all left deep signs of their presence. It became the capital of the Byzantine island territories and the settling point of the Order of the Knights of St-John after they were expelled from the Holly Land. The Knights of St-John were responsible for building the Medieval Town of Rhodes which has become one the major tourist attractions of Rhodes.

Rhodes is simply one of the best choices for business or pleasure in the Mediterranean. Its people' s hospitality, climate, natural beauty, historic monuments, traditional Rhodian villages, cosmopolitan, modern, but also romantic life, and up-scale services make it the perfect destination.
